Bernard Thomas, les secrets de la gloire
1997. As Belgium underwent one of the worst crises in its history in the wake of the Dutroux Affair, a young singer appeared on the national music scene. His name was Bernard Thomas, he came from France and he was going to conquer Belgium. In seven years and with more than four million albums sold, this young Frenchman became an pop icon in Belgium. A phenomenon that some thought incomprehensible, but many found natural, Thomas’s local success was in any case a cultural exception that defied all show biz logic. Originally, this film was to be part of a six-part series on Frenchmen who had made good abroad. But the filmmakers took a closer look at the case of Bernard Thomas and discovered a host of strange details. What if they had put a finger on one of the most amazing and absurd cultural manipulations of the new century? What began as a simple portrait became an authentic investigation.
