Battle of the Somme: the True Story
The first day of the Battle of Somme, July 1, 1916, was the bloodiest day in the history of the British Empire. The carnage was captured on film. But the shocking footage has never been shown as shot. Instead, it was combined with fake sequences to create The Battle of Somme, a propaganda film to rally a grieving nation that was seen by around 20 million people. Since then, the real story hidden in its footage has remained a mystery. A team of investigators attempts to do what no one has ever done, using forensic science to solve a mystery trapped on film over 90 years, identifying the soldiers and the places where they fought, and releasing the words they spoke on that fateful day, words that have never been heard, until now.
