Assunta Spina is engaged to a sailor. But when the machinations of a female loan shark send the sailor off to sea, she accepts the incessant advances of Michele, a rich butcher madly in love with her. A violent man, Michele winds up scarring Assunta's face out of jealousy. To keep him from serving his prison term far from Naples, Assunta seeks the help of a magistrate, the man with whom she finally manages to live a fully passionate relationship. Then the magistrate decides to return to his family and enter politics. He leaves Assunta, who utilises Michele, just out of prison, to exact her revenge.
