A FestaThe Celebration
Francisco Félix de Souza, Chachá I, died in Ajudá (Benin) in 1849, in his nineties. De Souza's notoriety as a slave trader had already reached such proportions that the English abolitionists believed his death would herald the end of slave trafficking. In 2004, Francisco Félix de Souza will be 250 years old. In Ajudá, where Don Francisco settled and made his fortune, the deceased are not considered dead; they live alongside with us for as long as we want them to. Francisco, nowadays, continues to be and more than 150 years later, he will still be whatever people want him to be. A film about history and its incongruities, about memory and the vast distance there is between historic and fabricated memory.
