Warum Kadriye sterben mußte?
The photo was flashed around the world to publicise a crime. It depicted women carrying a coffin to the graveside – an open breach of taboo in Muslim Turkey. In the coffin lies Kadriye Demirel, 18 years old and pregnant. Hers was a particularly brutal and vicious death at the hands of her own brother; his only reason was that she had brought shame on her family – at least that was how he saw it. The “honour murder” took place in Diyarbakir, in the Kurdish east of Anatolia. This is not an isolated case however; every year dozens of such crimes are committed in Turkey and very little is said. This time it will be different; the women carrying the coffin have seen to that. In the film, mother, neighbours and eyewitnesses tell how the unimaginable was planned and finally how it took its course. And they tell how nobody intervened to prevent the murder. The everyday tragedy of a young woman, which, thanks to the courage of one group of women, has become a beacon for all.
