The Winter for Belgium

Compared to France’s baying, belching and grimacing National Front leader, Jean-Marie Le Pen, his dapper and smiling Vlaams Blok equivalent, Filip Dewinter, looks like a dream son-in-law and a thoroughly decent sort of chap. But the contrast is only in the packaging: weigh up their politics and the difference will be in nanograms. The stakes are always the same: power. And if Dewinter secures the position he’s vying for in 2006—the highest office Antwerp has to offer—we can only pray for those whose skin isn’t as white as his.
