Unsere Wiener StaatsoperRemembering the Rebirth of an Opera House
On March 12, 1945, the Vienna Opera House, a key component in Austrian identity, was bombed, supposedly by mistake, by the Americans. Otto Schwarz tracked down the eye-witnesses to this tragedy: major singers such as Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Sena Jurinac, who were in the basement of the opera house when the air raid took place, and members of the orchestra who risked their lives to try to save this monument. Rebuilt as it had been before the war, the Staatsoper reopened on November 5, 1955, symbolizing the cultural regeneration of Austria after World War II. Fifty years later, these testimonies reconstruct the memory of this event.
