Un pont sur la DrinaA Bridge Over the Drina
When we speak of Bosnia, we mostly remember the names of cities, Sarajevo, Mostar, Bihac, Tuzla, Gorazde. And a massacre, Srebrenica. But we don’t remember Visegrad, because the western media never mentioned it. As if nothing had ever happened there. As if Visegrad had never existed. But Visegrad exists. It’s a city in eastern Bosnia, with a bridge. A majestic, symbolic bridge. A bridge immortalized by the novel of Ivo Andric. A bridge that is an emblem, a pillory, a mausoleum. A testimony.
