Tsuzumi no IeThe House of Drums
If a Noh drummer says he is willing to die for his art, you can believe him. Sophisticated and beautiful, Japan's traditional performing arts also demand a harsh physicality. Noh and Kabuki drummers howl, sweat and bleed. A career may end with a stroke on stage. This, they say, is a man's world; a visceral battleground of pure artistic integrity. In the sixties, a TV documentary made Reiko Tanaka famous as "the drummer girl", also known as Sataro Tanaka IX, diligent pupil of an illustrious father, Kabuki drummer Denzaemon Tanaka XI. This is the story of a seemingly ordinary Japanese family which has breathed new life into astonishing creative traditions.
