The film recalls the war years through a series of flashbacks that are introduced through particular events on the day of the actual Japanese surrender ceremony in the Bay of Tokyo on board the USS Missouri on September 2nd 1945… It is the day after the war. Nine million Japanese are homeless. 3 million have been killed in the war and many of these were civilians who died in the massive American bombing campaign of which the atomic bombing was only a part. More than 6.5 million Japanese, half of them civilians, are detained in the former occupied territories Part two, Japan in Ruins, is also on view at the Fipatel.
