They Chose China
In 1950, President Truman sent American troops into Korea to check communist expansion. During the conflict, GIs captured by the Chinese army were put in camps. 23 of them decided to remain in China. In 1954, they were given a 90-day cooling-off period to change their mind. Only two of them chose to go home, but they were sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison. At the height of Maccarthysm and the red terror, American public opinion was convinced that these soldiers had been brainwashed. This film looks back on a little-known episode of the Cold War: the fate of three former GIs who chose China.
