More than three years of inquiries have made it possible to show how tobacco manages to preserve, even to increase its stranglehold, to the detriment of public health. It all began in 1953, during a secret meeting between the five leading tobacco giants, who decided to forge a positive image of cigarettes in the minds of consumers. The film unspins the web of this global conspiracy, which reposes on three mechanisms: 1) scientific manipulation, with dishonest articles on the non-harmfulness of tobacco, 2) commercial subversion, through the “glamorization” of tobacco and the circumventing of laws, and 3) the economic strategy, which involves infiltrating countries with closed markets by using contraband networks.
