Sri Lanka, les naufragés du tsunami

Sri Lanka, the Castaways of the Tsunami

On Dec. 26, 2004, off the coast of Sumatra, a tsunami devastated countries on the Indian Ocean, claiming hundreds of thousands of lives. In Beruwala, a small fishing village, some of the injured perished for lack of aid which only arrived hours after the disaster, leaving the population alone and distraught. Six months later, some of the survivors attempted to rebuild, with little means but a lot of determination. No official NGO came to this village’s aid, far removed from the epicenter of the earthquake. Without aid, destitute, the inhabitants of Beruwala healed their wounds as they could. Today, virtually nothing has changed. Beruwala: a corner of Sri Lanka forgotten by all.
