The film follows the studio recording of the first part of the complete 14 Sequenze for various instruments, composed by Italy’s Luciano Berio, (b. 1925). In the scenic arrangement, the performance of the soloist Carolin Widmann, the brilliant German violinist, is place in the foreground. It also involves archive footage showing Berio at the time of the work’s premiere (1976) and newsreel footage that puts it in an historical context. The entire performance is given a luminous, original treatment that echoes the composer’s inventive work.
