Schreeuw in het heelalA Cry in the Universe
Centering on last May’s rehearsals in Amsterdam of her second symphony, “Symphony No. 2 for orchestra and solo voice” (1979), this documentary is an introduction to the Russian woman composer Galina Ustvolskaya. She lives like a hermit in her small St. Petersburg apartment, and usually gets around in a wheelchair. She admits that her scores are hard to perform and she can be so obsessive as to specify if the actor declaiming her text should keep his shirt collar buttoned or unbuttoned. Accounts about her outspoken manner in the end invariably dwell on her appealing, sometimes funny but deeply original personality.
