Santisima Muerte
Every year, at the end of October, the traditional Day of the Dead takes place in Mexico. In the night of the 31st, the Zapotechi Indians go to the cemetery, bringing with them food, alcohol and everything the deceased used to love. There, they spend the night waiting for the dead. Around midnight, the angelitos (children’s souls) arrive, then the next day, those of the adults. Following the trail of the copal (a kind of incense), the souls enter the homes of their relatives and have something to eat after their long journey. During the following days, the enmascarados (disguised villagers) go from house to house to oblige the souls to return to where they came from, thus sounding the return to a more profane daily life.
