Baghdad: Tuesday, August 19, 2003. A huge explosion shakes the city, a thick column of black smoke rises from the Hotel Canal, the HQ of the United Nations. The explosion has ripped open the building. It takes a few minutes for aid workers to realize that Sergio Vieira de Mello, special UN envoy to Iraq is under the rubble, along with 22 UN functionaries. Who killed this man who had come to repair what dictatorship and war had destroyed, and why? Amal Moghaisel tries to answer this question.
