Olivier Py, Tristan et Isolde
Tristan and Isolde is certainly one of the most complex and innovative works of its time. In this opera of an ambiguous climate where the urge for love cohabits permanently with the death drive, Wagner explores the limits of harmony and atonality. This film is a recording of Oliver Py’s staging of this opera at the Grand Théâtre of Geneva in February 2005. Here the mythological dimensions of Wagner’s opera are placed in a contemporary setting, creating a fiction where Py himself becomes a central character. As our guide behind the scenes, he shows us what normally remains unseen: the interior life of the characters, the rehearsals, and the performances.
