Nur ein Stück Stoff

"I am a Muslim, so I have to wear the headscarf," says Meriam. Her sister Zahra had to leave the junior high school because she wouldn't take it off. The two girls, both good students, cannot understand why the headscarf should get in the way of their schooling. This documentary was shot in autumn 2004, not long after the new law on the Islamic headscarf went into effect. It was approved by the majority of French. In 2004, more than 400,000 Muslim women went to school, most of them without the headscarf; only a few dozen were dismissed. At the fall term of 2005, the headscarf virtually ceased to be a problem. But the difficult question of the integration of Muslims in France remains a burning issue.
