Mourir d'amiante
We now know that asbestos is a dangerous, insidious product. But we have been using this “white gold” for years. To gauge this health scandal, Brigitte Chevet focuses on Eternit, one of the leading French fibrocement manufacturers. In the vicinity of their factories, the victims of white gold are many, their dread immeasurable. Eternit alone accounts for some 1,300 cases of recognized professional maladies, 400 of them lethal. Though this company is only one tragic example among others, it is a particularly interesting case: it allows us to make sense of the vast silence surrounding this tragedy and its deep roots.
