The story begins in Moscow in 1925, in the family of Professor Gradov, a distinguished surgeon. In this family, one is doctor from father to son. To his great disappointment, his children, caught up in the revolution, have broken with family tradition. His oldest son, Nikita, has become a high-ranking officer in the Red Army. His second son, Kirill, develops a passion for Marxist philosophy and Bolshevik practice. His daughter, Nina, is a talented young poet who becomes Trotskyist activist. Thanks to his reputation as a doctor, Professor Gradov is quickly initiated into the secrets of the Kremlin. The fate of fictional characters overlaps with the History of Russia in the course of three generations, interweaving the destiny of the Gradov family with that of Russia.
