Mort d'un tribun populisteDeath of a Populist
Agitator of the Dutch political scene, as critical about the traditional right as he was about the conformist left, charismatic party leader Pim Fortuyn enjoyed increasing favor in the polls, so much so that he could predict that he would be the Netherlands' next prime minister. But, on May 6, 2002, a few days before the elections, he was assassinated by Volker van der Graaf, now known to be guilty and sentenced to 18 years in prison. Fortuyn's party received a third of the votes at the elections and took part in the coalition government. This posthumous victory has not endured but the words and phrases of the populist orator have left a deep mark on a country with a high immigration rate.
