Monsieur Raimu est un génie
A native of Toulon, Jules Muraire went into show business at an early age. He debuted as a music hall and café-concert comic. To support his mother after the death of his bankrupt father, he performed in Marseilles and found work as a prompter at the Alcazar. At the Palais Crystal, he adopted the stage name, Raimu. Wounded at the front in 1915, he went on to enjoy roles written for him by the likes of Tristan Bernard and Sacha Guitry. Then came the crucial meeting with Marcel Pagnol, the Comédie Française, success and honors. His fellow actors, writers and producers talk about the artist whom Georges Simenon called a “a great big child of genius.”
