Mon âme près des cendresMy Soul by the Ashes
You can see them in the rain, wind and snow, and sometimes on sunny days, in the long alleyways of the Pantin Cemetery outside Paris — the figures of men who spend their days in the company of the dead. Moving from section to section, from grave to grave, these professional prayers pace up and down this immobile site to meet families in mourning and offer their services to recite the traditional Jewish prayers for the dead. Through their continuous presence — some have been around for more than 40 years — they have given this place a soul. Their chanting fills the section of sky over the cemetery with psalms. But their world is neither quiet or serene. Open to all, the cemetery is a place of rivalry. Newcomers have changed the situation and some want to impose their conditions.
