Michel Galabru
He received first prize at the Conservatoire de Paris, then entered the Comédie-Française, where he played Shakespeare, Molière and Feydeau. But we recognize Michel Galabru from his massive frame and his stentorian voice in more than 230 films for cinema and television. He has been directed by Georges Lautner, Jean Pierre Mocky, Bob Swain, Bertrand Blier and Jean-Luc Godard. In 1978, Edouard Molinaro cast him as the MP Charrier in La Cage aux folles. For Galabru, the actor must have an instinctive, animal quality—to feel and appear right isn’t something you learn. In 2004, he co-starred with Claire Maurier as a couple on the edge in Daniel Collard’s Nuit noire, which was shown at the Ciotat Film Festival where this interview-portrait was shot.
