Inspired by a newspaper item, this film tells the love story between Maria, a young Catalan and Assou, a young North-African. They meet in North Africa where Maria has gone to study Arabic. Assou decides to leave his country and to follow Maria to Spain. He remains deaf to the arguments advanced by his mother, and they marry and have children. Their life is destroyed when Assou is murdered by a right-wing group known for its racism. Sinking into despair, Maria ignores her children, and remains alone in the dark. Her father and her friends try to help her but without success. As for Assou’s mother, she holds Maria responsible for her son’s death. Maria undertakes steps to bring her husband’s murderers to justice. When the court’s verdict doesn’t take the racial nature of the crime into account, Maria decides to fight until crime’s real motive is recognized.
