Made in Taiwan
Made in Taiwan is part of a series of documentary portraits of 17-year-old girls all over the world, directed by women filmmakers. Each film focuses on one girl, revealing the varieties of their hopes and dreams, constraints and yearnings. As a dance student, Yi-chun from Taipei, a slender girl, is supposed to be on a strict diet but she loves to eat, thus her family and her teachers are watching her closely. The film follows Yi-chun in her everyday life in school, where we find remnants of the military dictatorship, and at the dance school. To be a teenager in Taiwan is not about "sex, drugs and rock'n roll" but about discipline and the struggle for the best possible start to professional life.
