The Afar region of Ethiopia is one of the most extreme places on earth. Valerie Browning, an Australian woman, first came to Ethiopia as a missionary nurse during the famine in the early '70s. She married Ismael, an Afar elder, and together, they have devoted their lives to helping the Afar, a forgotten people at the bottom of the ladder in one of the poorest countries in the world. In the Afar, Valerie is "Maalika", which means angel. For nearly twenty years, she has lived amongst the nomadic people, and now they see her as one of them. Maalika – An Angel From Afar sees Valerie travelling, often on foot, to impoverished villages where she tries to gather women to be educated.
