Loin de Fidel
Havana and the Florida Coast are separated by a little more than a hundred miles. Miami is a large bustling urban center, 60% of whose inhabitants are of Cuban origin. Their feelings for their homeland oscillate between nostalgia and rejection. Nevertheless, they like to think of themselves as resolutely Cuban-American. Upon their arrival in the U.S., they are assisted by the Bureau for Social Integration, which gives them a kind of primer in American capitalism. With respect to other immigrant communities, Cuban-Americans are distinctly privileged, and the majority of them obtain American nationality within five years of being on U.S. soil. The future of Cuba after Castro remains an open question, but in the interim, all these Cuban-American settle in Miami… for good.
