Lettres de la mer Rouge
In the chateau of George Daniel de Monfreid, at the start of the 20th century, the son, Henry, fell seriously ill. Having looked death in the face, he decided to break with his comfortable “petty-bourgeois” existence. He entrusted his two sons to a young German woman close to the family and set off to travel as far as possible: Djibouti. There he traded coffee, guns and smuggled hashish. He kept up a regular, highly detailed correspondence with his father and his German friend, Armgart. These were the “Red Sea letters.”
