Les Trois Vies de François-Joseph Fournier
Who is François-Joseph Fournier, who rests in an imposing white marble mausoleum on the island of Porquerolles? Across decades and continents, Fournier lived the equivalent of several lives worthy of the wildest adventure stories. He was born in 1857 aboard a barge on the banks of a dark canal. He made his way to Paris on foot; traveled to Canada where he worked on the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway; to Panama, where he worked on the digging of the Canal; to California and Mexico, where he made his fortune in gold and silver mines. When he returned to France, driven out by Mexican revolution, he bought the island of Porquerolles and settled there for good with his family. He died in 1935, the father of seven children. He was one of wealthiest men of his time.
