Les Renaissances du cinéma coréenThe Nine Lives of Korean Cinema
The accumulation of prizes on the international film festival circuit for Drunk on Women and Poetry, Old Boy and 3-Iron has once and for all focused attention on the cinema of South Korea, which, since 1999, has reached record highs in ticket sales, taking the front lead ahead of American films. By the sheer volume of films screened and by its high attendance, the Pusan Festival has become in just a decade the most important film festival in Asia. For this country traumatized by its division, the cinema represents a mirror, a place for free expression and creative liberty. But this situation is in danger, and the privileged bubble that has encouraged the Korean Film Industry since 1999 can burst at any moment under North American pressure.
