Les Kouriles, entre deux mondesKuril Islands, Between Two Worlds
Iturup is one of several islands lying at the southern tip of the Kuril Chain, located 8,000 kilometers from Moscow, and very near the Japanese coast. In the summertime, its waters are literally besieged by millions of salmon who return upstream to breed, spawn, and then to die. 75% of the fish in the region is fished by Hydrostroi, a huge, private maritime enterprise, founded at the end of the Soviet Empire. During the summer months, the company conducts its work around-the-clock, and its activities are closely monitored by the Japanese, who stubbornly claim their rights over the Kuril Islands from which they were expelled by the Soviet Red Army at the end of WW2.
