Les Héritiers du guaranáThe Heirs of Guarana
This film deals with the on-going conflict between the Sateré-Mawé Indians in the Amazon, who invented the guaraná culture, and the major industry that markets it worldwide. The Indians have understood that preceding generations were misled by a mercantile system that led them to destroy the forest needlessly. In reaction to this situation, Obadias Bastista Garcia, president of the General Council of the Sateré-Mawé tribes, launched the Guaraná project in 1996, a binding, long-term economic plan which refuses this race to mindless productivity. The film describes its combat as it gives the floor to all the players in this economy, in order to compare two modes of productions and two diametrically opposed philosophies.
