Les Forçats de la TerreSlave Workers in Amazonia
They call them the “landless”: four million farm workers doomed to wander and be exploited in the fazendas (the great Brazilian farms and plantations). A campaign relayed around the world by human rights organizations has trained a spotlight on this modern form of slavery. In March 2003, president Lula officially launched a plan to eradicate slave work. Some 10,000 persons were liberated in several months. But the fight is far from being won: the sanctions decided by the courts often remain unheeded. Géraud Marie conducted an inquiry in the Para state, in northern Brazil, where he recorded the testimonies of these forced workers and followed the police in charge of liberating them.
