Le Procès de Bobigny
Bobigny, 1972. Martine, a public transport employee, helped her daughter get an abortion after being raped. Reported to the police, they were charged and set to be brought to trial. Thanks to a book she borrowed from the company library, Martine contacted the only lawyer whose name she knew: Gisèle Halimi. With Martine’s assent, Halimi set out to make this trial a test case in order to denounce this injustice inflicted on women. The affair became a cause célèbre and a major public opinion campaign led to the charges against the daughter being dropped, though Martine remained indicted. Halimi had to once again confront the judges so that the law penalizing illegal abortion as a crime could be amended.
