Le Japon sous les décombresJapan in Ruins
Japan in Ruins is the second Japan film, after Tokyo, the Day the War Ended. The country was in near chaos, Japanese society had been crushed and bled dry. 9 million Japanese were homeless, the nation was starving. When peace was signed on 2nd Sept. 1945, over 6 million men and women were out of the country. Their return was stretched out over a period of 10 years: the later the return, the more Japan had changed and the more complicated and painful were the reunions. We met seven of them who returned in the 1940’s and ‘50’s to their country. They have accepted to tell us their own personal stories and the hardship of reconstruction. Part one, Tokyo, the Day the War Ended, is also on view at the Fipatel.
