La Séparation
1905: a debate opens at the Chamber of Deputies that is also a combat. The orators clash over a bill for the Separation of Church and State that it convulsing the country. Aristide Briand tries to find an acceptable compromise, between the virulent anticlericals who dream of de-Christianizing France and the last handful of Catholic orators. What is the place of religion in society? Who should finance religious edifices? In the course of debates full of surprises and twists, a formative law is worked out—one that today remains as topical as ever. This film, shot in the hemicycle of the Palais Bourbon, reconstitutes the debates of 1905 based on official minutes of the sessions.
