La Grande Duchesse de Gerolstein

In this opera-bouffe premiered in Paris in 1867, Offenbach gave vent to his sense of parody: the book is a delightful send-up of the mighty of this world as well as the military class, and the music pastiches the conventions of grand opera. The artistic team that had scored with La Belle Hélène three years earlier at the Châtelet theater, have done it again with a version that restores several usually cut but essential passages. Laura Scozzi’s choreography, performed entirely by male dancers, is a blithe combination of French cancan, music hall and ballet. A hilariously acerbic show in a perfect production.
