La Controverse de Valladolid

In a convent in Valladolid, some sixty years after the discovery of the New World, two men confront each other to discuss whether Indians should be considered men like all others. For the Dominican Las Casas, an ardent defender of the Indian cause, there is no doubt, whereas the Spanish, hungry for more conquests, deny the evidence, and instead subjugating and massacring the natives by millions. The philosopher Sepulveda tells the Dominican that certain people are born to be dominated. Both men agree on one point: the need to save souls. The outcome of this impassioned debate, decisive for the fate of millions of men, could well be surprising…
