La Clemenza di Tito
Vitellia, daughter of the deposed Emperor Vitellius, is enraged. She has been rejected by Emperor Titus, who proposes to marry his lover, Berenice, instead. Vitellia demands that her admirer, Sextus, lead a conspiracy to kill Titus. Sextus is so bewitched by Vitellia that he agrees to carry out the assassination, even though Titus is his dearest friend. Of all Mozart’s operas, La Clemenza di Tito is probably the one most strangely devoted to love. It develops all the figures, in a tragic mode, and can be interpreted as a profoundly serious demonstration of the absurd, vertiginous disaster of betrayal.
