L'Étrange NoëlViflaim, Mos et Baba
In Romania, especially in the north, peasants follow the Orthodox calendar. The winter has begun, village activity has slowed down, the animals have been brought in: preparations for Christmas are underway. Here traditions related to Christmas are unlike those we know since they bear the deep mark of fervent Orthodoxy, to which is joined the pagan rites of peasant culture. Between Saint-Ignatius and the day of Christ’s baptism on January 6, time comes to a standstill: the peasants stop working. Everything is colored by songs, festivals, age-old rites: it’s the Romanian Christmas, the days of the “Viflaim,” the pagan, mystical carnival.
