Jana Sanskriti, un théâtre en campagne
Nowadays, more than 1,000 Indian peasants have been fighting the evils of their society—patriarchy and corruption—with an unusual medium: the theatre. On stage, a husband beats his wife, a politician steals the belongings of a peasant, and the public immediately sits in judgment. The “forum-theater” transforms the spectator into a spect-actor and every situation of oppression depicted in theater is thrown open to the community for debate, discussion and finally consensus. Jana Sanskriti is the world’s largest movement of the Theater of the Oppressed, a method first conceptualized by Brazilian theater director Augusto Boal in the 1970s. It is known around the world and has proven to be an extraordinary tool for liberation, which brings about a democratic debate.
