Île Diego Garcia

Not very long ago, 35 years, the United Kingdom secretly began the deportation of a whole nation. Though Her Majesty’s subjects, the 1,500 inhabitants of the Chagos Archipelago, in the middle of the Indian Ocean, were loaded on ships and sent into exile forever. The reason ? The UK had just leased the Island of Diego Garcia to the United States, free of all inhabitants, to become one of their most secret military bases. Those Chagossians now number 6,000 and they are living in utter poverty in the slums of Seychelles and mainly Mauritius Islands. But they fought and are still fighting hard to be allowed to go back home. This is the story of an ethnic cleansing, a deportation of a people, and its battle against two giants: the governments of the United Kingdom and the United States.
