Il Furto della Gioconda

The Mona Lisa Theft

This series is based upon a true story that very much aroused public opinion and is at the origin of the legend of the Mona Lisa. In the year 1911, an Italian emigrant, Vincenzo Peruggia, moves to Paris to escape the poverty of his country and finds a job as a manual labourer inside the Louvre. He's in love with the beautiful Aurore, a circus acrobat, and decides to bring her a work of art she has always so much loved, the famous Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci. The theft shocks public opinion in all of Europe, and the Mona Lisa probably becomes the most important painting of all times. A tremendous inquiry starts for the French police, in particular Inspector Lepine...
