Humbert Balsan producteur rebelle
The emotion caused in the film world by the death of producer Humbert Balsan is on a scale with the void he leaves behind him. Always on the go, always active, Humbert gave of himself completely, investing his energy to serve others and a certain idea of cinema. He set a record for an independent, producing more than 60 films in 25 years, always at a risk and often with foreign filmmakers—17 films were made by Arab directors. In this headlong manner, this increasingly radical commitment, Balsan finally got his wings burnt. Born into an industrial grand bourgeois family, Balsan chose his own way, refusing to follow the beaten track. This film makes no mystery of the fact, but gives the floor to his film friends, directors and actors, who talk about the Balsan method, this method of working off the cuff, between disorder and passion. This portrait doesn’t try to embellish the truth or pay him tribute, because he is no longer among us. It tells of the romance of a man who wouldn’t settle for a small life. Humbert wanted to live a big life over which he alone had control.
