Holocaust: A Musical Memorial Film From Auschwitz
"When this music plays, we know that our comrades, out in the fog, are marching like automatons; their souls are dead and the music drives them, like the wind drives dead leaves, and takes the place of their wills".(Primo Levi – If this is a man). On the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau this memorial film explored the shocking fact that the Nazis used music as a psychological tool in their machine of death. Survivors who were forced to play in camp orchestras and in person for SS officers recount their experiences and, for the first time since its liberation, permission was given for music to be heard again in Auschwitz. Leading international musicians from around the world, including the Russian violinist Maxim Vengerov and the American pianist Emmanuel Ax, pay tribute to the 1.1 million who died. The film features music by Mozart, Bach, Chopin and others who have commemorated this human tragedy in sound.
