Havana Hip Hop Underground
What exactly do we know about Cuba? Little more than a few clichés: the regime of Castro and the memory of Che, cigars, the rumba, the salsa, old American cars… But today a segment of the population, in particular the young generation, is waking up from a long hypnosis. In rap music, Cuban youths have found a means of protest and rebellion. It is nevertheless the Castro regime itself that has allowed for the emergence of these rap groups, and in less than five years, the island has seen the emergence of more than 600 groups. Their originality, within an artistic movement largely dominated by the North American neighbor, makes of them today an ideal observatory for the diverse demands of Cuban society.
