Harry Graf KesslerCount Harry Kessler
Harry Graf Kessler was born in 1868 in Paris into a fairy-tale-like world of social brilliance and refined culture. Raised and educated in three countries, Kessler put his life and fortune at the service of not only artists and writers but of world peace and democracy in Germany. His greatest accomplishment however is his diary: a colourful panorama of European society, 57 years of a turbulent life and more than 12,000 people appearing in over 10,000 pages. The publication of this magisterial diary has now rescued Count Kessler from oblivion and ensures that he will be read not simply for his brilliant evocation of a world forever lost to us, but also as a symbol for an ideal to which we may still yet aspire.
