Glenn GouldGlenn Gould
Gifted pianist, essayist, broadcaster and radio documentarian, Glenn Gould created controversy with his interpretations of classical music and surprised everyone when he gave up live performance at the age of 32 in favor of studio recordings. His experiments in recording and sound were often stimulating. 20 years after his death, Gould remains one of the most unusual and most famous figures in the world of classical music. Here, After looks back at the life and work of Gould, starting with his reputation as it exists today. The film seeks to get at the essence of Gould’s genius in his relations with the audience, which far exceeds the limited notion of a musical public and which lies elsewhere. It involves a whole series of interlocutors —ordinary people—in such a way that Gould himself seems to be answering questions. He appears to be the narrator of the film. By drawing on a synthesis of all existing materials on Gould, not only musical (sound and audiovisual), but also literary and intellectual, this film examines Gould’s genius in all its ramifications.
